What sells at San Jose auctions

South Bay buyers mostly bid at Bay Area galleries in the East Bay, plus local estate sales: Asian art, California art, jewelry and estate furniture.

Common sale types: estate auctions, online timed auctions, gallery catalog sales and estate sales.

Buying tips for San Jose auctions

• Buyer's premium. Most houses add a buyer's premium (a percentage of the hammer price) and sometimes an online-bidding fee. Put the total, plus any sales tax, into your max bid.
• Preview days. Go to preview or ask for condition photos. Look for repairs, chips, missing parts and replaced hardware.
• Before you bid. Read the terms: payment methods, pickup dates and shipping. Many sales are "as is, where is" with no returns.
• Know your stop. Set a max for each lot before the sale and keep to it; live bidding moves fast.
• Local note. Factor the drive or shipping from the East Bay into the price of large items.
