What sells at Philadelphia auctions
Greater Philadelphia is a long-established auction market: Americana, folk art, period furniture, coins and firearms sell in the city and at long-running houses in Bucks, Montgomery and Chester counties.
Common sale types: estate auctions, online timed auctions, gallery catalog sales and estate sales.
Buying tips for Philadelphia auctions
- Buyer's premium. Most houses add a buyer's premium (a percentage of the hammer price) and sometimes an online-bidding fee. Put the total, plus any sales tax, into your max bid.
- Preview days. Go to preview or ask for condition photos. Look for repairs, chips, missing parts and replaced hardware.
- Before you bid. Read the terms: payment methods, pickup dates and shipping. Many sales are "as is, where is" with no returns.
- Know your stop. Set a max for each lot before the sale and keep to it; live bidding moves fast.
- Local note. Country sales in the suburbs often run multiple rings at once; know which lots you want and when they come up.
